Big Cat Rescue

We got to Tampa early the day before we left for Cuba. We found a rescue center for large wild cats who have been abused, abandoned, or removed by the government for various reasons. Big Cat Rescue is located on 60 acres just north of Tampa International Airport.

As we walked by each area, we were provided with information concerning where the cats came from and the conditions in which they lived. The stories would break your heart.

Many of these cats were originally housed in small cages and undernourished. Now, they have large cages they live in and plenty of food, Every two weeks they go on "vacation" where they have large open areas to roam away from people.

The cats are encouraged to do what they want. Each cage area has a place they can hide away from the tours that are offered twice daily. If they want to look at the visitors, they may or may not. Their choice.

Some of the cats are in witness protection as the owners and a governmental agency are currently in court. Only a select few actually know where these animals are from and their actual names.

They are not traded, sold, or breed. These cats are basically in a "retirement home" where they can live out the rest of their lives in relative comfort.

It is a non-profit organization with many, many volunteers.

If you have some extra time in Tampa, make sure you visit the Big Cat Rescue.

I must be off!
